Outcome #2: Theoretical Base
"Integrate theories and knowledge from the arts, humanities, sciences and nursing to develop a foundation for nursing practice" (Ferris State University, 2011).
The BSN nurse is educated in many areas, including the arts, humanities, sciences, and nursing. This outcome means that all areas of the BSN curriculum must be incorporated into nursing practice.
Theory is essential to nursing. It provides a foundation in which to base practice as well as a means to base new knowledge. I met outcome #2, theoretical base, throughout the program by studying and applying theory in writing. The three pieces of writing included provide examples of this application of theory.
1. The first example chosen is a group presentation on Katharine Kolcaba's Comfort Theory. I felt this to be an excellent choice to demonstrate completion of this outcome because it required digging deep into nursing theory and synthesizing the knowledge gained into a meaningful presentation.
2. The second example is a geriatric assessment paper that I wrote. This paper involved performing a thorough assessment of a geriatric patient. A component was to examine any theories that may apply to the patient. Upon completion of the assessment it was apparent that both the Role Theory and the Immunity Theory could be applied to the patient.
3. The third example that I have provided is a review of the movie, The Big Chill. The movie revolved around a group of friends brought back together again for the funeral of a friend, Alex, who had committed suicide. Alex, was adjusting poorly to aging as evidenced by his suicide. This could be seen as an example of role theory. The review of this movie presented an opportunity to apply theory in a different way. It was helpful to use theory in a way other than traditional nursing case study or practice.
