Outcome #1: Collaborative Leadership
"Provide collaborative leadership roles in the provision, delegation, and supervision of nursing care while retaining accountability for patient safety and the quality of that care" (Ferris State University, 2011).
This outcome refers to the BSN nurse's role in effectively leading a team, and delegating tasks to other team members. The BSN nurse is responsible for coordinating patient care among many staff members and departments. Strong leadership ability is needed to provide safe, quality patient care.
Collaborative leadership is the cornerstone of professional nursing. Leadership skills are necessary to manage patient care, work with the interdisciplinary care team, and to delegate to assistive staff. I have selected three pieces of work to add to this category.
1. The first piece is a persuasive letter that I wrote. The letter showcased my leadership ability because I not only identified an area for improvement in healthcare, but also provided research to support my claims along with a proposed plan to address the issue. Leaders are expected to navigate the complexities of healthcare and to solve problems through critical thinking. This letter exemplifies the type of problem solving that is required of leaders.
2. The second piece that I have chosen for this category is a group presentation called Living well with diabetes. This was a group project focused on designing a service to fill a need in the community. The project required a lot of planning and collaboration amongst group members. It was the most challenging group project I have worked on mainly because of the dynamics between group members. The other members of my group were not very engaged and didn't put forth much effort in the planning or organization of our project. I do not generally seek out a leadership role in projects like this, but because of the group dynamics I was thrust into that position. The project provided me an opportunity to build confidence while functioning in a position of leadership.
3. A third piece that I have selected for the category of collaborative leadership is a paper I wrote that analyzed a nursing leader. We spent time studying leadership in our text and articles, but this project gave me the opportunity to spend time with and interview a practicing nurse leader. I gained insight as to how to apply the leadership concepts learned in class to actual nursing practice.
The cumulative effort of the above assignments provided the knowledge base to serve as an effective leader as well as the practical experience of working with a nurse leader and leading a team of students.
