Outcome #3: Generalist Nursing Practice
"Organize the interdisciplinary health care needs of diverse populations across the lifespan toward achieving the goal of healthy individuals, families, groups and communities" (Ferris State University, 2011).
The BSN nurse is responsible for taking care of a wide range of people. This outcome refers to the BSN nurse's role in meeting the health care needs and organizing the care of a diverse group of patients.
One of the main reasons I felt it was important to obtain a BSN degree was to gain a better understanding of the diverse populations that I serve. The following pieces of work are examples of how I have met this outcome.
1. The first example is a windshield survey that I completed. This personifies generalist nursing practice. A windshield survey requires assessing an entire community. I found this assignment to be meaningful because I analyzed a very familiar community but found new understanding by completing the focused assessment required by the assignment.
2. The second example provided is a presentation on pain in the older adult. Understanding pain and pain management is so important for nurses because pain affects all patients. Appropriate assessment and management of pain can be the difference between a good and a bad outcome, especially as perceived by the patient. The presentation that I provided demonstrates that I have gained an understanding of these concepts.
3. The final example that I provided to demonstrate completion of Outcome #3 is a population risk paper. The focus of this paper was on individuals who are incarcerated. Understanding the unique health concerns of the incarcerated was an opportunity to learn about a new population. The paper provides local and national data demonstrating understanding of this population both near and far.
