Outcome #5: Health Care Environment
"Advocate for improving health care across the continuum of health care environments" (Ferris State University, 2011).
The BSN nurse is a patient advocate. This outcome is referring to the BSN nurse's role in maintaining and improving the standard of patient care across all of the fields of nursing.
The pieces of work that I chose to demonstrate completion of this outcome were selected because they provided evidence of my ability to advocate for health in varied environments.
1. The first piece selected is a presentation of the project that I carried out in my workplace. The project involved providing staff training on the new referral management process. It also provided an opportunity to delve into NCQA, which is an organization that our health system receives its certification. My project was a good example of meeting this outcome because the goal of the project was to improve the quality of referral management.
2. The second example provided is a paper that I completed on my service learning project. Interestingly, in the paper I spoke about how the project would contribute to the professionalism outcome. I still agree with my statements about how it contributed to professionalism, but I also think it has made a valuable contribution to outcome #5 health care environment. The project enabled me to work with patients and families outside of the care setting. It provided me an opportunity to better understand the needs of the population that I serve.
3. The third example that I included is a fishbone diagram on catheter acquired urinary tract infections (CAUTIs). This was chosen because an area of concern was identified and potential causes were identified. This type of assignment demonstrates critical thinking about an aspect of healthcare that could be improved. A better understanding of CAUTIs has the potential to improve patient care.
